Not long ago the answer was almost always “get an office server.” Today, for the vast majority of small businesses, cloud comes out ahead — but there are exceptions worth knowing.
When cloud makes sense
If your team works from different locations, needs access outside the office, or you don’t want to deal with hardware maintenance, cloud wins easily. You pay only for what you use, with no upfront investment in hardware that depreciates in 3-4 years.
When a local server still makes sense
If you work with very large files locally (heavy video editing, for example) and your area’s internet isn’t reliable, a local server or NAS can still make sense for day-to-day work — with cloud backup on top for safety.
